Exploring "The Heart of the Crocodile"
"The Heart of the Crocodile" is the first film to be made on the culture and customs of East Timor as presented by Timorese experts themselves. The DVD of "Heart of the Crocodile" will be launched at Victoria University, Flinders St. Campus on Friday February 23.
Divided into three parts - culture, religions and languages - the film features unique insight into East Timorese traditions on births, deaths and marriages. Footage of actual mourning rituals, weddings and traditional reconciliation customs are included as well as examples of dancing and music from around the country. As well, the DVD package includes never before seen footage from 1999 of successful reconstruction efforts after more than 80% of the nation's infrastructure had been destroyed.
At a time when East Timor is in the news again, after the civil turmoil of last year, 'The Heart of the Crocodile' aims to show both the East Timorese and the world that this new nation has much to offer.
The film was made by Thomas Nerhmann who since 1992 has been developing, filming and producing video films both in Australia and overseas.
In 1999, Thomas went to East Timor and filmed and interviewed throughout the country following the violent destruction by Indonesian troops and militias. The resulting film was presented to the United Nations Session on the establishment of an International War Crimes Tribunal for East Timor. Since then Thomas has filmed extensively in East Timor.
Thomas Nehrmann said "Like many other new democracies throughout history, the USA, France and Australia to name but a few, East Timor is struggling to establish itself as a stable and secure nation. However, now is not the time to abandon East Timor, now is the time to support and hopefully, 'The Heart of the Crocodile' will provide a positive during these challenging times."
"As part of the film, linguist, Dr. Luis Costa speaks on the various languages of East Timor and their link to cultural and national identity. Bishop Basilio Nascimento provides an insight into the relationship between animism and Catholicism and how they have co-existed. He also discusses the influence of the 'modern world' on the East Timorese and the need for the Catholic Church to respond accordingly. Cultural Custodian, Mr. Eugenio Sarmento vividly describes the ancient customs of the East Timorese and the need to nurture and develop this culture for a youth that is in danger of becoming a 'lost generation'."
Thomas Nehrmann is available for interview.
The producers and the Office of Bishop Basilio have organised for 10% of all sales of the DVD package to be donated towards education scholarships for East Timorese secondary school students.
Victoria University has demonstrated an ongoing is commitment to increase educational opportunities for East Timorese students. One of the scholarships made available through the Victoria University Foundation is the East Timor Scholarship. At the launch there will be the opportunity to donate to the VU East Timor Scholarship Fund.
The Consul General of Timor-Leste Abel Guterras will officially launch the film.
